Robert Matthew William Burley (“Rob”) initially took a surgical path, gaining his part 1 FRCS before being persuaded (by his wife) that general practice would allow a better work life balance. After completing GP training in south Manchester, he and his family moved to New Zealand, where he worked in a large semirural practice; his four children (soon to be five) had a wonderful if slightly feral life.
Before returning to the UK he decided he would join the army, much to the amusement of his close family and friends, who did not think his very individual style was suited to military life.
