Pensions: Government delays plan to allow doctors to “partly retire” to cut tax bills

Proposed changes to the NHS Pension Scheme designed to stop senior doctors leaving the workforce because of punitive taxation have been pushed back by six months.

The changes, announced in April 2021 and set out in a consultation document in December last year,1 would allow consultants and other high earning members of the NHS Pension Scheme to continue pensioned employment in the 2015 section of the NHS Pension Scheme while drawing benefits from the 1995 section.

Members of the 1995 section would be able to take between 20% and 100% of all their pension benefits in one or two drawdown payments, without leaving their current job, from the age of 55. Those members of the 1995 section …
