Michael Edward Shipley (“Mike”) was born into a family of pharmacists. He was successful academically with a scholarship from Eltham College, London, and then from Peterhouse College, Cambridge. He did his clinical training at King’s College London.
He did his rheumatology training in Bath, Bristol, and at Kings, doing an MD in leukotrienes and publishing in Nature.
He was appointed consultant rheumatologist at the Middlesex Hospital in 1982. He was an excellent physician and a kind and inspiring leader and mentor. Even after retiring, he continued to offer wise and thoughtful counsel to his colleagues. It is so often said, but Mike’s patients truly adored him.
