Kia Soong Tan worked as a consultant respiratory physician at University Hospital Wishaw, Lanarkshire, for 20 years.
Soong was born in Taiping, Malaysia, and after his primary schooling there attended Fettes College in Edinburgh for his secondary education. He was one of a long line of doctors in his family; his grandfather was among the first medical students from (what at that time was) Malaya to train in Edinburgh in the 1920s. Following in his footsteps, Soong’s father, brother, and sister became doctors.
