Starting work at the BMJ as the new editorial scholar has been incredibly exciting.1 Picking up where former editorial scholar Pat Lok left off, I’ve spent the last month or two thinking about ways to continue her amazing work over the coming year.2 For many of us, autumn signifies the shaking off of the previous academic year ready for the start of a brand new one. With that, we turn our thoughts to important personal and professional goals that we seek to achieve in the weeks and months ahead.
