Deaths in England and Wales have exceeded the five year average in 2022, official figures show, in a trend driven by more deaths than expected since March.

Officials said that the trend could reflect a combination of factors that require further investigation. March, April, and May saw increases in deaths due to cardiac arrhythmias, predominantly among people over 80.
