Born in Cheshire to Frank Williams, CBE, a senior engineer for the BBC, and Kathleen Williams, David was brought up in north London, with his sister, Mary. He attended Highgate School and spent a year as an English-Speaking Union scholar to the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, USA. Having read classics at A level, he went on to read medicine at Trinity College, Cambridge, and St Thomas’ Hospital, qualifying in 1964.
As a junior doctor, he worked at the National Heart Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, Kingston Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital, and the Maudsley. He spent a month working in Yemen for the British Yemen Relief Committee, and six months as a medical officer with the Qatar Petroleum Company …
