Robert Noel Evans, universally known as Bob, was born in Annascaul, a small village in County Kerry, close to the Atlantic Ocean. At the time the Irish civil war was at its height, and it was in Kerry that fighting was most intense. One result of the war was that his parents, William and Norah, were dispossessed of their farm, and William set off to look for work in America, with the intention that Norah and their two young sons would follow when he had established himself. For whatever reason, they were never to see him again. Norah was left to support herself and her young family, first running a boarding house and later a smallholding.
