As overall satisfaction with the NHS falls to the lowest level since 1997 (https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/public-satisfaction-nhs-social-care-2021), it’s worth reading an essay about how quickly the public turns heroes into scapegoats (Postgrad Med J doi:10.1136/postgradmedj-2022-141703). The author discusses Henrik Ibsen’s play An Enemy of the People, in which the medical officer in a Norwegian spa town finds out that the water supply is contaminated. Instead of showing gratitude for identifying the danger, the townspeople turn on the doctor because his discovery threatens the town’s economy.
