The BMA will continue to lobby Stormont to commission safe and accessible abortion services in Northern Ireland after a highly charged debate on the matter at the association’s annual representative meeting in Brighton on Tuesday.
A motion highlighting that the Stormont assembly has deliberately failed to commission sufficient and safe abortion services within Northern Ireland, endangering the lives of women and depriving them of their rights under the Human Rights Act 1998, was passed by the meeting despite ethical and political objections raised by doctors speaking against it. Multiple points of information were raised to correct facts or clarify statements made by these speakers.
