A system reset for the campaign against too much medicine
Dear Editor,
My very best wishes in the campaign against too much medicine. illness due to over-prescribing has to be one of the most accessible areas for improvement and saving the hard pressed NHS.
But I fear that the pressure from Pharma and the lack of incentive for an over-stretched medical workforce will ensure that any progress remains glacial.
The whole process of medicine needs to be reviewed starting with a recognition that medicines and surgical and technological interventions have nothing to do with health. They can be miraculous in disease control, A&E and postponing death but health is not just the absence of disease but the state of optimal physical, mental and spiritual well-being which is best achieved by steering away from drugs as much as possible.
Who are the healthier ones? Those who take medicines or those who avoid them?
