Timothy Bryan Hales was born in Stafford to Walter Bryan Hales (a dental surgeon) and Phyllis Marjorie Hales (a milliner). During the second world war he was evacuated to Montreal, Canada, where he stayed with family friends and on return to England attended King Edward VI Grammar School. He then read medicine at Trinity College, Cambridge University, and the Middlesex Hospital Medical School. After qualifying he was a house physician in the department of radiotherapy at Mount Vernon Hospital and a house surgeon at Gulson Hospital, Coventry. In 1958 while a senior house officer in medicine at Macclesfield district general hospital, he met his future wife, Susan, a nurse and subsequent midwife.
