Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a label applied to people with evidence of impaired glucose metabolism but whose glucose or HbA1c levels aren’t high enough to meet diagnostic criteria for diabetes. An umbrella review reckons that prediabetes is associated with a 6% to 25% increase in mortality from all causes, and a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer, and dementia. Mind you, many of the individual meta-analyses covered by the review were judged at high risk of bias (Diabetologia doi:10.1007/s00125-021-05592-3).
