Vitamin D for people with prediabetes and diabetes

The UK Biobank study reports that in people with prediabetes and diabetes, lower vitamin D levels were associated with an increase in cardiovascular events and a raised all cause mortality. Whether this risk could be reduced by vitamin supplements is another matter. Only a few weeks ago, Minerva noted a large randomised controlled trial that found no benefits from five years of oral vitamin D3 supplementation in people aged 60 and over (Diabetes Care doi:10.2337/dc21-2193).
