Lancet will not retract discredited paper on tissue engineered trachea transplants

The Lancet has said that it will not retract a 2008 paper on tissue engineered trachea transplants, despite concerns about the conduct and validity of the research raised in a letter to The BMJ.1

The 2008 paper, involving researchers from Hospital Clinic Barcelona, Karolinska Institutet, and UCL, reported that transplant of a human cadaveric trachea, decellularised and colonised with stem cells from the recipient, “immediately provided the recipient with a functional airway, improved her quality of life, and had a normal appearance and mechanical properties at four months.”2
