People at the highest risk of being infected with HIV should be offered pre-exposure prophylaxis, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has said in draft guidance.1

The new guidelines, which are an update on the 2007 advice on preventing sexually transmitted infections,2 are the first time NICE has recommended PrEP for routine use. Before October 2020 PrEP was available in England only through clinical trials,3 mainly the PrEP Impact Trial, which was launched in 2017 by NHS England and recruited over 20 000 people.4
