Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
Cuban scientists hope to have ready before the end of the year an effective vaccine against the Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19, and for that we are working on the first prototype of the Soberana Plus drug, although the most important thing now is to move forward with booster doses.
Before the beginning of this week, 95.7% of the Cuban population (2 years and older) already has the complete scheme from the use of the nationally produced immunogens Abdala, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus.
Regarding the booster doses, a total of 685,324 people have already received it, of them 69,994 as part of a clinical study and 615,380 because they belong to selected territories and risk groups.
At the end of November, the island was already designing a specific vaccine against the new variant that could be developed in a short time.
The effectiveness of Cuban vaccines against Ómicron will soon be known since evaluating the capacity of the serum of those vaccinated against the new variant requires resources that we are acquiring.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Tuesday that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has already been detected in 77 countries, although it is probably already present throughout the world, and is expanding at a rate that we had not seen in any of the above strains.
But vaccines alone are not going to get any country out of this crisis, since the transmission of the coronavirus must be dealt with by other means, including the use of masks, avoiding crowded places, good ventilation or hand hygiene.
People are considering that the omicron variant is associated with less severe cases, but we have learned before that underestimating this virus is dangerous. That is why in Cuba the use of masks is mandatory.
Kind Regards
