William John Pryn (“Bill”) was born in Calcutta, India, into a military medical family. He underwent a boarding school education from a young age in the 1930s and 40s at Belmont Prep School and Malvern College. At school, he not only excelled academically, but also in archery and boxing.

He supported his medical studies at Guy’s Hospital by joining the Territorial Army and was a member of the 21st SAS Regiment, becoming parachute trained. Bill enrolled into the regular army after his preregistration year, as lieutenant, and continued his training as an army surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). …
