Alan Martin Driscoll was born in Plymouth. His father was chief pharmacist to the navy at the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar and his mother a piano teacher. From them he inherited his interest in medicine and art. He qualified at St George’s Hospital (University of London), taking both the conjoint board exams (MRCS, LRCP) and the University of London finals (MBBS) in 1961.
