Promoting weight loss in people with diabetes

Most people with type 2 diabetes need to lose weight to improve their cardiovascular risk and reduce the need for medication. Unfortunately, as an umbrella review makes clear, dietary intervention, whether low carbohydrate, high protein, Mediterranean, or vegetarian, rarely achieves useful weight loss. The greatest weight reduction occurred in people on low energy formula diets, in which proper food was replaced by a low calorie liquid shake. Even then, the average weight loss was only a few kilograms (Diabetolgia doi:10.1007/s00125-021-05577-2).
