RCGP disputes health secretary’s claim that A&E pressure is due to lack of GP appointments

The Royal College of General Practitioners has disputed a claim by the health and social care secretary for England that pressure on emergency departments was being caused by a lack of GP appointments.

In a letter to Sajid Javid, shared with The BMJ, the college’s chair, Martin Marshall, said that there was no evidence to support the claim made by the health secretary when he gave evidence to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee on 2 November.
