Thomas Manners (“Tom”) was born in Bishop Auckland. He attended the local grammar school and went on to study medicine at Kings College, Newcastle upon Tyne, then part of the University of Durham, in 1939. After national service he undertook training posts in Stoke on Trent, Manchester, and Newcastle and was appointed consultant pathologist at Ashington General Hospital …
