Zoe Morgan is a critical care dietitian in Swansea. After starting a degree in law, she changed direction to a scientific, hands-on role helping others, and undertook a dietetics undergraduate degree. Zoe qualified more than 10 years ago, and has worked mostly with patients having gastrointestinal surgery. She currently works in critical care. We find out what her job involves and what medical students and junior doctors can learn from working with dietitians.
What does a dietitian do?
Dietitians work to improve patients’ nutritional status and their quality of life through critical appraisal of the evidence base and application at a health policy or individual level. NHS dietitians work across many fields. Their role is split broadly between community and inpatients, and each role has specific tasks and challenges. For example, dietitians on stroke or head and neck surgical wards manage patients’ nutrition via feeding tubes.
