William Ian Campbell

My father, William Ian Campbell, was a recent president of the British Pain Society. He was one of few who worked in anaesthetics, intensive care medicine, and (most of all) chronic pain management.
William Campbell was born in Belfast. He attended five primary schools and two secondary schools, owing to his father’s work in the Royal Ulster Constabulary. On finishing school, he was accepted to study medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, although it was a choice of career between medicine and photography. A mentor in photography told him: “You can work in medicine and have photography as a hobby, but you can’t do it the other way round.”
