David Stuart was born in 1927 in Kitale, northern Kenya, to an American mother and a British father. He grew up in Port Rietz, Mombasa, and was sent to boarding school at an early age, finally completing his education at the Prince of Wales School in Nairobi. He left Kenya at the age of 18 to study medicine at the University of London (Queen Mary College), attached to the London Hospital Medical College. He passed his final exams in April 1953.
When the prospect of a job in the UK did not seem possible, he and our mother emigrated to South Africa in 1954. He worked in the Ernest Oppenheimer hospital in the Orange Free State, which dealt with …
