Martin Mansell was the son of Rena and Joe Mansell, second-generation immigrants from Russia and Romania. He obtained a scholarship to Haberdasher’s Askes School, qualified from Guy’s Hospital in 1971, and became MRCP in 1974 and FRCP in 1989. He was awarded an MD from the University of London in August 1982 for work on NAG and hypertension and subsequently published over 150 papers. He was appointed consultant nephrologist and senior lecturer at the St Peter’s Hospitals in 1983, moved to the Middlesex in 1992, and to the Royal Free in 2005.
