Pensions: government policy has affected the NHS workforce, say MPs

NHS pensions rules led to doctors reducing their working hours or retiring early, MPs have concluded.

The Commons Public Accounts Committee’s review of public sector pensions1 found that pensions affect employees’ decisions about their work and that NHS Pension Scheme rules had led to a large number of doctors reducing their working hours, opting out of the scheme, or retiring early.

“It is becoming clear that public service pension policy is affecting the delivery of frontline services in some areas, such as education and health,” the report said.
