James Alan McKinna was the youngest son of two GPs. He was educated at West Bridgford Grammar School, Nottinghamshire. He did his surgical training in London and was consultant surgeon at the Royal Marsden Hospitals in 1972-92 and honorary surgeon to Chelsea Hospital for Women.

His major interest was in the management of breast cancer, and he became a Hunterian professor of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1989 with his lecture “The earlier diagnosis of breast cancer—a 20 year experience at the Royal Marsden.” His private practice was in Kensington and at the Cromwell Hospital (emeritus consultant in 1995, when he retired several years after leaving the Marsden).
