Hakim BenYounes was born in Tripoli, Libya, on 6 October 1959. He graduated from Al-Fateh University Medical School in May 1983. He worked there for four years before travelling to Scotland in 1987 with a plan to sit the FRCS examinations and take this and his experience back home to Libya. He first worked in Glasgow before moving to work as surgical attachment to Law Hospital, Carluke, in August 1988. This appointment would change the direction of Hakim’s life. He was promptly appointed as surgical registrar and met Susan, a medical registrar, who was later to become his wife. His plans to return to Libya changed, and he chose to stay at Law Hospital in a region that he came to love, and to call home.
