Katherine Brenda Kelly (“Katie”) was born in Lerwick. Her mother was a Shetlander and her father a Bristolian, but they met in India during the second world war as an army nurse and Royal Air Force fighter pilot, respectively. Although the family moved away from Shetland when she was 2, that heritage remained important to her, and she and her family visited the islands regularly. Her parents worked overseas in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia, so Katie attended boarding school at Poles Convent in Ware.
