Shielding advice will be lifted in April

More than 3.79 million clinically extremely vulnerable people in England will be told that they no longer need to shield from 1 April 2021, as cases of infection and hospital admissions continue to fall. Letters to patients will advise them to keep taking steps to reduce their risk of catching the virus, such as maintaining strict social distancing and keeping their overall social contacts at low levels, while working from home where possible. More than nine in 10 people in this group have had a first dose of a covid vaccine.

Bonus for health and social care staff in Wales

The Welsh government said that an estimated 221 945 health and social care staff in Wales would receive a one-off payment equivalent to £735 (€852; $1008) each (£500 after deductions) as gratitude for their “extraordinary contribution in keeping Wales safe” during the pandemic. Vaughan Gething, health and social services minister, said, “Over the last year, Wales’s NHS staff and social care staff have shown a remarkable amount of commitment and courage from the initial outbreak of the pandemic right through to the current second wave.”
