David Edward Sargent was born in Wimbledon, son of a GP. He was not academic at school and always refuted the saying that your schooldays are the best days of your life. However, it was at Dauntsey’s School in Wiltshire that, alongside his academic education, he developed his interest in the countryside and many of the animal husbandry skills that he used in his spare time and especially in his retirement.
