Jane Merry was born in the manse in Shotts, Lanarkshire, where her father was a minister. She moved to Paisley aged 10 and attended Paisley Grammar School, where she excelled and won many prizes including the dux medal. During the war years she worked as a medical registrar in the department of Noah Morris at Stobhill Hospital. She became a member of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and completed her MD thesis on “Aspects of heart disease in old age with special reference …
