Evan Reginald Price was born in the village of Llanon, Cardiganshire, and grew up in Cardiff,. He entered the University of Wales to study medicine at the age of 17. One of his two sisters, Madeline, had a paralysed leg following polio, which influenced his choice of profession. He graduated in 1944 with his primary medical degree from Cardiff, and opted to take exams for a second medical qualification from the University of London in 1948.
