The NHS announcing, during the covid-19 pandemic, its ambition to become the world’s first net zero emissions health service before 2050 is admirable.1 Although the pandemic has given us opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint, such as the rise of telemedicine,2 it has also placed some hidden environmental challenges on the NHS.
