Robert William Walker Paterson (“Robin”) was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, on 26 May 1938, the only child of William and Jessie Paterson. William Paterson was the chemist in Blantyre while Jessie worked during the war as a nurse at Hairmyres Hospital. Robin attended Hamilton Primary School from 1942 to 1949 and then Hamilton Academy from 1949 to 1951 before being transferred as a boarder to Strathallan School in Perthshire, where he spent five happy years.
