Physical activity and dementia

Physical exercise is generally thought to be a good thing, improving cardiovascular health in particular. However, a study from Denmark suggests that you can have too much of it (Scand J Med Sci Sports doi:10.1111/sms.13846). Among 5000 men who took part in the longitudinal Copenhagen Male Study, incidence of dementia was 50% higher in those whose occupation involved heavy physical labour when compared with those with sedentary jobs. By contrast, high levels of leisure-time physical activity had a small protective effect.
