Michael F Whitfield (“Mike”) was born in St Andrews. He studied biochemistry and medicine in Edinburgh, where he and his quirky sense of humour became much loved by his classmates. After graduating, he did four years’ research in neonatology, gained an MD, and became lecturer and senior registrar in Sheffield. He then moved to Canada, spending a year in Toronto before moving in 1981 to Vancouver as a neonatologist.
