After training posts in London, Bristol, and Cardiff, Simon Meller was appointed to a post as a general paediatrician at Carshalton and as a paediatric oncologist nearby at the Royal Marsden Hospital. He took an interest in ultrasound and in nuclear medicine and helped develop these new techniques for the benefit of children. He had a busy career but had to retire early at the age of 57 because of poor health. He then enrolled for a law degree which he was awarded with first class honours, followed by a masters. He took an interest in medical mediation and founded the Medical Mediation Foundation with Sarah Barclay and was also chairman of the Rainbow Trust Charity, which supports families living with serious childhood illness.
He was an enthusiastic and excellent photographer and a gadget man.
He leaves his first wife, whom he met as a trainee nurse but later divorced; his second wife, Jennie, whom he met at the Royal Marsden; and four children.
