Ray Cope entered Liverpool University in 1948 on a Lancashire County scholarship. He represented the university on the track team for many years and also played rugby for the Waterloo Club. After winning the J Hill Abram medal for pharmacology and therapeutics, he graduated MB ChB in 1954. After house jobs locally, he took a three year short service commission in the Royal Navy, serving in Sri Lanka and on a large aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean.
