Martin Thornton Tanner Bryant was born in Hampstead, north London. His father, a commercial artist, died in a car accident when Martin was 3 years old. His mother, a doctor who founded the Christian Medical Mission (read obituary: https://www.bmj.com/content/316/7137/1096), determined that Martin and two of his sisters should pursue careers in medicine. His third sister became a nurse.
