The East London GP explains why she wrote to her royal college to call for increased diversity in its leadership

“Doctors from Africa and South Asia have supported NHS general practice since its inception, so I was genuinely shocked when I looked at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and saw how unrepresentative it is at its highest levels—that is, its executive team, council, and trustee board. Admittedly I am going by photographs on the website, but there are no data.

“Covid-19 has disproportionately affected those from ethnic minorities, and the Public Health England report on understanding the impact on these groups1 has highlighted racism, stigma, and distrust as underlying the existing inequalities.
