Stella Elizabeth Grace Gibson was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, in 1927 to William Hamilton Gibson, a GP, and Grace (née Baird), a teacher. Her family were strong advocates of girls’ education, and living in the house that contained her father’s medical practice had a strong impact on Stella and her siblings. Stella, her twin sister, Iris, and their elder brother, John, all became medical doctors. Stella in particular was profoundly affected by the death of her father while on duty in 1941, when a parachute mine fell on his casualty station in Paisley. The mine killed 92 people, including William Gibson, the senior casualty surgeon.
