Evi Polak, a Belgian photographer and former emergency department nurse, returned to Antwerp University Hospital to capture life in the emergency department under covid-19.

In her submission to the Helsinki Photo Festival she wrote, “Real heroes never sleep . . . Yet trust them, because they save lives!

“Belgium is fighting very hard against covid-19, and for moments like these I am proud to be a nurse and a photographer.”

The festival, which has the theme of trust, is open until 30 September and features 58 international and Nordic photographers displayed in venues around the city.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, has reported that Belgium has the second highest deaths per head of population in the world, at 85.80 deaths per 100 000 population.1
