Re: Covid-19: Admit ethnic minority pregnant women to hospital earlier, says NHS England

Dear Editor

May I please say bluntly:

Stop talking about ETHNIC MINORITY when describing a person or a patient.

Lord Liverpool (Prime Minister in Napoleonic times) was one 1/8 Bengalee. BAME?
The present Prime Minister of a country you and I know well, is 1/8 Turkish. BAME ?
Don’t look at somebody’s face and decide: Minority Ethnic. Danger.

The present population of the UK is pretty mixed.
It used to be said - not pejoratively - that “England is the great mongrel of Europe”..
Now, I say - not pejoratively - : England is the great mongrel of the World.

And please do not assume that sickle cell is only found in Africa. It is also found (shock, horror) in Greece.
And Thalassaemia? Found not only in the Mediterranean countries. Also in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Punjab Pakistan, Punjab India.

A fair face, blond hair. Might yet have sickle cell, or Thalassaemia. But I did not think they were BAME, you say!

No, an odious term that means nothing, I reply.

Sincerely
