Social enterprise will deliver low cost vaccine
Imperial College London announced a new social enterprise, VacEquity Global Health (VGH), to bring its covid-19 vaccine to the world. For the UK and low income countries abroad, Imperial and VGH will waive royalties and will charge only modest cost-plus prices to sustain the enterprise’s work, accelerate global distribution, and support new research. The enterprise is supported by Morningside Ventures, a private equity and venture capital investment company founded in 1986 by the Chan family of Hong Kong.
Racism
NHS blood unit is “systemically racist”
An independent investigation into the working conditions in a division of the NHS’s blood and organ transplant division concluded that the north London department was “systemically racist” and “psychologically unsafe.”12 The findings supported claims from ethnic minority employees that they had faced discrimination for years in the awarding of jobs and that white candidates were given posts ahead of black applicants who were better qualified. The report concluded that the unit at NHS Blood and Transplant was “toxic” and “dysfunctional.”
Revalidation
GMC introduces greater flexibility
The UK General Medical Council (GMC) confirmed that doctors’ revalidation submission dates had been put back by as much as 12 months owing to the coronavirus pandemic. This means that doctors with a revalidation date from 17 March 2020 to 16 March 2021 can have their revalidation delayed for as long as a year.
