Kenneth Peter Goldman (“Ken”) was born and raised in London and was the first member of his family to become a doctor. He attended St Paul’s School and then spent two years doing national service in the Royal Air Force. He then went to Cambridge University, Peterhouse College, and completed his clinical medical training at St Mary’s Hospital.

Ken’s first registrar job was at Paddington Green, then he had a fruitful experience at Sully Hospital in south Wales between 1960 and 1963, which at the time was the Welsh Regional Centre for Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery. It was here where I, then senior house officer, first met him. …
