Haripada Adhikary qualified in India and came to the UK in 1972. He was born in a small village, Rampal, in pre-partition India. After initially working as a mathematics teacher, he read medicine in Kolkata at Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College. He trained as an ophthalmologist before coming to the UK.
