The arrhythmia community suffered a great loss with the sudden death of Adam Fitzpatrick on Sunday 19 January 2020.
Adam graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in 1982. He had taken arts courses at school, but he switched to science very quickly, winning a first MB prize. Later at Barts he took a BSc plus two distinction vivas in final MB. His excellent early training posts included a registrar post at St Stephen’s Hospital, London, which established his interest in cardiology. At this point, he started research in his already chosen specialty at Westminster Hospital from 1987 to 1989. This period, while he worked with Richard Sutton, cemented his subspecialisation in electrical aspects of cardiac function. This led to 16 scientific publications, 28 abstracts, and his MD degree, which he achieved very strongly, and all in only two years.
