Elizabeth Rang (née Clapham) was born in Oxford where her father, botanist Arthur Roy Clapham FRS, had a teaching post at the university. After the onset of war in 1940, at the age of 4, Elizabeth and her younger sister, Jen, were, with around 80 other children, evacuated to the USA as part of the much written about programme set up between Oxford and Yale universities. Their mother, Brenda Stoessiger, a statistician, returned home. …
